Furka Cogwheel Steam Railway

The Furka-Dampfbahn is a historic steam train in the Swiss Alps. The line stretches over approximately 18 kilometres and connects Realp in the canton of Uri with Oberwald in the canton of Valais.

Today, visitors can enjoy a unique journey through beautiful mountain landscapes, tunnels, and bridges while travelling on restored steam locomotives over 100 years old. These locomotives have been carefully refurbished and brought back into operation by dedicated volunteers.

The railway is an important part of Swiss cultural heritage and attracts tourists from all over the world every summer.

Steam Train Travel Between Realp, Gletsch and Oberwald

Guests can travel in either 1st or 2nd Class between the stations of Realp, Gletsch and Oberwald, with a 25-minute stop at Furka station to enjoy the mountain views.

Premium Class is a more exclusive experience, with personalised service throughout the journey. Guests are met and accompanied on board by an attendant and will be served  an aperitif on the train. Refreshments are provided in the VIP Stübli at Furka station with dessert on the train. Passengers will also receive a commemorative souvenir.

The Wander Express – Combine Rail Travel and Hiking

The Wander Express is a diesel train operating along the Furka mountain route, taking hikers to stations and hiking trails en route. Keen hikers can travel part of the route by rail and hike other sections, creating a flexible itinerary.

The Wander Express is ideal for day trips, hikes along the historic railway line or as a convenient return journey after a day in the mountains.
